Bitwise’s Katherine Dowling Talks Rules and Regulations During TC: Crypto Sessions – TechCrunch

Crypto entities ranging from large exchanges to small projects are on the road to regulation in the United States. Whether it’s the Securities and Exchange Commission or the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, many in the industry are looking for concrete future guidance on how to build compliant businesses in an emerging industry while adhering to established rules for traditional finance.

And, while crypto founders and investors know that regulation is inevitable, they are also looking to find the most beneficial deal possible as they try to influence policymakers. It’s a difficult balance – enough regulation to protect retail investors from a hostile environment, but not enough to stifle the growth of the crypto industry and future innovation in the space.

This regulatory tug of war is just one reason we’re thrilled to have Katherine Dowling, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Bitwise Asset Management, join us on stage at TC Sessions: Crypto in Miami on November 17.

We will discuss whether or not there has been an increase in institutional adoption and how the regulatory framework might impact adoption in the future. Given the frustration with lack of clarity in the regulatory guidance, we’ll ask Dowling how crypto firms and legal counsel are advising clients to navigate the current landscape while continuing to operate in a compliant manner.

Dowling brings a unique perspective to the table, having experience working both at private equity firms and as a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office Economic Crimes Unit. We’ll dive into the latest information on how emerging regulatory frameworks will affect the digital asset industry and ask if we can expect to see any clarity on this in the US by the end of the year. .

Prior to joining Bitwise, Dowling held positions as General Counsel, CCO and COO at several financial and private equity firms. She also co-founded Luminate Capital Partners, where she served as GP, Managing Director and COO.

A Harvard law graduate, Dowling spent more than a decade as a federal prosecutor, most recently in the Economic Crimes Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, where she worked with the FBI, the SEC, IRS, and other agencies to prosecute cases of insider trading, fraud, and money laundering, among others. She also sits on the boards of two not-for-profit organizations.
