Quiet stop

The story

If your office happy hour has a low turnout, silent shutdown could be the culprit.

What is a quiet stop?

When employees stop going above and beyond what they are paid for. The pandemic has blurred the lines between home and work, leading to job burnout. And many felt exhausted doing more than one person’s job, especially during the Great Resignation. On top of that, employees became frustrated with the lack of growth opportunities and low pay. Enter: Quiet Shutdown. Common side effects include: no longer staying up late after work, hosting virtual lunches, or doing anything beyond the job description. But make no mistake, silent quitters are still doing their job. They just set stricter limits.

I feel seen.

We understood. A survey has found that American workers are among the most stressed in the world. And constant stress and pressure could lead to several health issues like heart disease and diabetes. But experts say quitting smoking quietly isn’t the answer to solving burnout. It can be difficult, but talk to your manager if you are unhappy at work. Or move to a better workplace. Meanwhile, experts recommend companies consider things like prioritizing tasks and establishing strict guidelines to protect employees (read: no work emails on weekends or after hours ).

American workers are exhausted. Many use silent renunciation to prioritize their sanity. But if you’re tired of your job, there are tools to help give your career the boost you’re looking for.

And Also…This

What makes people say “on your marks, get set, vote”…

Primary elections. Today voters in Florida, New York and Oklahoma cast their ballots. In the Empire State, voters will choose candidates for U.S. House seats. A big one that everyone is watching: The 12th arrondissement. This is where two longtime House Democrats are vying for the same seat (thanks to the redistricting). NY also feels very special with not one but two special elections underway.

  • But wait, there’s more: Floridians will choose between two Dems to face Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in November — ahead of his scheduled 2024 presidential run. And in Oklahoma, there are GOP primary polls and Democrats for the US Senate.

Who said “not so fast”…

Former President Trump. Yesterday he filed a lawsuit asking the Justice Department to stop combing through the documents seized at Mar-a-Lago. Reminder: The FBI has removed 11 sets of classified documents from Trump’s residence. And opened an investigation into potential violations of the Espionage Act. Now Trump wants a federal judge to appoint a special master (i.e. a third party) to do his own review in case the documents are not admissible in court. The DOJ said it was aware of the lawsuit and would file a response. It all comes as a new report reveals the government has recovered more than 300 classified documents from Trump since he left office.

Who’s ready for a new chapter…

Dr. Anthony Fauci. Yesterday he announced that he would step down from his government duties in December. Including as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and top medical adviser to President Biden. Fauci has spent more than five decades working for the government and has advised seven presidents. He was celebrated for his work on HIV, AIDS and COVID-19. But his work during the pandemic has not gone without criticism (think: for lockdowns and masking guidelines). Now Fauci is ready to “inspire and mentor the next generation of scientific leaders.” Biden thanked Fauci for helping America become “stronger, more resilient and healthier.”

What takes a push…

Memories. A new study yesterday found that sending weak electrical currents to the brain can improve memory in older people. The research is in its early stages, but results showed the boost lasted for a month. And that there were no serious side effects. Now scientists hope the technology can one day help people at risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Who says ‘cheerio’ at Kensington Palace…

To guess.

Who started a dance party…

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin.
