Santander’s Piotr Zielonka on CoinGeek Backstage: Metaverse, Blockchain Technology Sets the Tone for the Next Decade

Every few decades new innovations arrive that are so revolutionary and change the world for good. blockchain technology does this today, and it lays the foundations for the future, believes Piotr Zielonka of Santander Bank Polska SA.

Zielonka spoke to CoinGeek behind the scenes host Becky Liggero in Warsaw at Blockchain 4 Gamesan event that brought together gamers, blockchain enthusiasts, techies and even bankers like him.

Zielonka is a senior equity research analyst at Santander Bank Polska, the central European country’s third-largest bank. He focuses on the technology industry, with a particular interest in games.

“We’re excited for emerging trends in the industry because a new emerging trend can define the future of an industry for the next few years,” he said.

Change is not easy, he admitted. However, when an emerging trend or technology is revolutionary, nothing can hold it back and this sometimes leads to the collapse of existing juggernauts that do not adapt quickly enough.

Zielonka recalls decades ago when some of the biggest companies in certain industries were tiny startups with big ambitions. In video game, for example, he remembers the beginnings of CD Projekt Red. Today, the Polish company is a giant in the gaming world with some of the biggest games, including The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077.

“[Today] we have new trends like metaverse, like blockchain, like Web3. These are new trends that are emerging and starting to transform not just the gaming industry, but the tech industry in general,” he said.

Zielonka warned any company that stagnates under the mistaken belief that its influence will last forever. This kind of mentality will “probably be the end of this business because there’s always something new on the horizon.”

Poland has become one of the largest gaming marketplaces, both for consumers and developers. The country has over 400 game development studios that produce some of the most successful games. According to Piotr, it comes down to the hardworking nature of Poles.

“We are a country that is still trying to define who we are and what we want to achieve,” he noted.
