The supply of engineering and information technology talent within the blockchain industry is not meeting the demand.

According to a new study by OKX crypto exchange and LinkedIn.

Financial talent makes up 19% of blockchain-oriented employees, according to the report. Engineers, meanwhile, represent 16%. And business development, information technology and sales staff account for about 6% each.

Analysis includes sample research data from LinkedIn covering 180 countries from January 2019 to January 2022.

The most in-demand jobs are crypto traders, software engineers, analysts, support analysts, and account managers – which tend to pay relatively higher.

But the finance category ranked sixth in terms of hiring demand in June, according to LinkedIn’s job postings. Instead, people in engineering and information technology fields are most in demand as companies develop blockchain capabilities, followed by professionals in product management, marketing, and human resources. .

The study looked at both crypto-native companies and traditional entities vying for a foothold in digital assets.

The fastest growing title was “quality assurance analyst,” which grew by 713% from June 2021 to June 2022. Crypto technicians and compliance specialists ranked second and third, growing 350% and 253%, respectively, over that span.

“The blockchain industry is transitioning from a highly financial to a highly technical nature,” the report states. “It will make full use of the combination of technical and financial attributes of blockchain to gradually develop into an important part of the digital economy.”

Emily Landon, CEO of The Crypto Recruiterstold Blockworks that his company receives many requests for marketing, investor relations, and developer roles, including front-end developers, as well as people familiar with the Rust and Solidity programming languages.

But finding tech talent has become increasingly difficult because candidates don’t always market well on LinkedIn, she added. Others have deleted their LinkedIn accounts due to recruiter spam, Landon said, rushing to Twitter and Discord instead.

“It’s hard to find them on these platforms,” ​​Landon said. “Basically, these developers went incognito.”

LinkedIn data shows that the total number of platform members working in the blockchain industry grew 76% year-over-year through June. The United States has the most people working in space, followed by India and China.

In terms of job openings, demand for blockchain talent is most concentrated in the United States, China, France, India, and Germany.

According to the report, the average tenure of global blockchain talent is 1.2 years. Apart from the influx of people from financial and technology companies into the space, the industry’s talent flow is mostly coming from within the segment.

Despite the year-over-year growth, overall, female talent remains rare. The segment has about four times more men than women, according to the report.

“[We’ve had] an incredibly difficult time, especially to find women in space,” Landon said. “We want to help more women get into technical positions.”
